About Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most advanced form of medical imaging technology available. Several Nobel Peace Prizes have been awarded for advancements discovered during the development of MRI technology.

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio frequency waves to show soft tissue, skeletal and other bony structures, such as the brain, abdomen, organs, vertebrae and joints. The imaging produced by this technology is so detailed it is like being inside the body.

Technically explained, MRI is performed with the examined part of the patient centered in a magnetic field identical to, but much stronger than, the field generated by the earth. Most hydrogen atoms (protons) contained in body water tend to fall in line with the magnetic field. After pulsed radio waves of short duration are locally applied to modify proton orientation, these protons return to their initial alignment emitting radio waves of specific frequency. These emissions are detected by an antenna placed around the patient and computed into images.

An MRI exam causes no pain and there are no known harmful biological effects produced by the magnetic fields. Patients are able to communicate with the technologist through an intercom at any time during an MRI exam. Depending on what area of the body is being scanned, the process can take from 30 to 50 minutes.

For athletes and active individuals, MRI can play a major role in diagnosing and treating complicated injuries sustained during physical activity.

We also provide a research service to academics in the Ottawa, Gatineau, Hull region. Our scanner is equiped with the capability of conducting Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) as well as structural studies. Depending on requirements, we can assist in study design and analysis.
